Divisions will include:

1st & 2nd Grade Recreation Hoops
3rd & 4th Grade Recreation Hoops
3rd & 4th Grade Travel Basketball (Sceening Required)
5th & 6th Grade Recreation Hoops
5th & 6th Grade Travel Basketball (Screening Required)
7th & 8th Grade Travel Basketball (those trying out for their school team must register for Travel. Full Refunds will be given to those who make the school team and choose not to play rec too. Refund issued within a week of School Roster postings.)

Travel Team screenings will be held Saturday, November 14th. Please see schedule below:


Please note that the start date for practices & games, date of the last game and the game/practice locations are tentative and may change based on the number of teams we field, gym availability and the weather. Weather permitting, all games will be completed by February school vacation with the exception of all Travel Basketball.

Early Bird Travel Registration ends 10/24/2015. A $25.00 late fee will be assessed on any registration after that date until teams are formed.

Early Bird Hoops Registration ends 11/20/2015. A $25.00 late fee will be assessed on any registration after that date until teams are formed.

Amherst Recreation Youth Sports Mission Statement
To provide and promote quality youth athletic programs for the residents of Amherst, NH. We Strive to model the qualities of good sportsmanship, build self-esteem, and develop life skills through the engagement of youth sports while providing a safe, healthy and positive environment where the youth of our community can learn the FUNdamentals of his or her sport.

1st & 2nd Grade Hoops
  • Co-ed Program running 6 weeks, from 1/9/15-2/13/16
  • This is a skills-based program that will focus on the basics of basketball. Passing, dribbling, shooting and overall game skills will be taught and reinforced through informal games.
  • This program is run by volunteer coaches. There is a place on the registration form to indicate your coaching desire.
  • Groups will be formed and led by volunteer parent coaches during Saturday sessions. Sessions will run for one hour between 9:00am-3:00pm. Each group will be placed in one session.
  • Groups will be scheduled in the multi-purpose room at Wilkins school on Saturdays.
  • Please note that requests to be placed on a specific team will be honored only in extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the Recreation Department.
  • Online National Youth Sports Coaches training is available. (See Link Below)
  • Volunteer Background checks will be mandatory for this program. The background check application is provided under "links" below

3rd & 4th Grade Recreation Hoops
  • This program offers both instruction and games. Practices will be held once weekly with weekend games, running approximately 12/12/15-2/13/16.
  • Tentatively we have scheduled all practices at the Wilkins School Monday-Friday and all games at the Souhegan High School Saturday afternoons.
  • Screening will be held to build teams. Screening date tentatively scheduled for 12/12/15. Times/Location TBD.
  • This program is run by volunteer coaches. There is a place on the registration form to indicate your coaching desire.
  • Please note that requests to be placed on a specific team will be honored only in extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the Recreation Department.

5th & 6th Grade Hoops
  • This league combines skill development and recreational play. Practices will be held one evening during the week at Amherst Middle School. Games are tentatively scheduled to be played on Sunday afternoons at the Amherst Middle School, running from approximately 12/12/15-2/13/16.
  • Screening will be held to build teams. Screening date tentatively scheduled for 12/12/15. Times TBD.

Those players who subsequently make the Middle School Basketball team and decide not to play for this Hoops program will get a full refund of their registration fee. Refunds will be issued up to one week after the school roster is posted. Players must contact the Rec office to receive the Refund.

Travel Basketball League-Boys & Girls 3-8th Grade
  • If you want more competition and commitment to the game, sign up to play in our travel league. Travel basketball plays a longer season and encounters competition from surroundings communities.
  • Players should expect to practice at least one day a week and play in one or two games weekly.
  • Players may play in either the Emerald Valley/Silver Valley League or Manchester Suburban League. League entrance will be determined by the coaches and Recreation Department.
  • This program is run by volunteer coaches. There is a place on the registration form to indicate your coaching desire.
  • Players must register for this program before screening and the screening results will be used to determine placement on teams. Every registrant is placed on a team but they are not guaranteed equal play time.

Saturday, December 12th
Boys 5/6 Hoops- 1:30-2:30pm at AMS ( Amherst Middle School )
Girls 5/6 Hoops- 2:30pm-3:30pm at AMS ( Amherst Middle School )
** Please enter through the gym doors. These doors are located on the side of the AMS building when you enter through the far parking lot. **

Sunday, December 13th
Girls ¾ Hoops- 2pm-3pm at SHS ( Souhegan High School )
Boys ¾ Hoops- 3pm-4pm at SHS ( Souhegan High School )
**The SHS gym is accessed through the rear glass doors located on the left hand side of the building as you face the front of the building. The high school has asked that we adhere to the rule of no food or drinks other than water in the gym. **

Please have your player bring a pair of dry, clean court shoes to their screening. All screenings are scheduled to last approximately an hour. Please note that this is not a try out, so please do not be nervous. All players will be a little rusty as it is everyone’s first time back on the court!
